THE YOUNG BROTHERâS SNOW DAY
THE BROTHERS TRIED THEIR HARDEST to concentrate on a checkers game atop the rickety kitchen table. Wearing a great smile, Alphonse hovered at Zachâs back; all the while, heavy snow kept piling up outside his shack.
Zach had a finger on a piece in his back row, but his focus was clearly on the snow outside when Alphonse instructed, âNever move from your back row. Itâs the key, Zach.â
Alphonse tapped Zachâs shoulder for emphasis. âWithout a king, your enemyâll have a shit time winninâ.â
âSometimes ya just gotta, Alphonse.â
âSacrifice everything, but donât ever leave your back row open.â
âHurry up, Zach!â Francis skittered from the table to the window and back. âJust make your stupid move.â
Zach sacrificed a piece, which Francis jumped with relish.
Zach couldnât take his gaze from the window as the snow continued falling fast. Already several inches deep on the sill, he couldnât contain himself and popped from his seat, asking, âDo ya think itâll snow all day, Alphonse?â
âNow Zach, I ainât in charge a snow.â
âShe looks good for packinâ, Francis!â
Francis suddenly charged the window again and pronounced with certainty, âI think snow days are better ân regular vacation days. Itâs like theyâre free, Alphonse.â
Zach rolled his eyes. âGeeze, Francis. Theyâre just a surprise is all. Think weâll get another snow day tomorrow, Alphonse?â
Alphonse, his expression dead-pan, cocked his head toward Zach. âIâd say if she doesnât stop snowinâ, we could be in fer a shit ton a snow.â
Zach thought for a minute, then turned toward Alphonse with a silly grin. âGoll, Alphonse, thatâs a stupid thing to say.â
âSeeinâ if ya were payinâ attention is all.â
While Francis whipped from the table to the window and back again, Zach couldnât take his attention from the outside. He finally announced, âItâs too nice outside to be playinâ checkers, Alphonse. Hey Francis, wanna build a fort?â
Francis grabbed his coat, yelling, âWeâll make two!â
âYou cominâ, Alphonse?â shouted Zach, shoving his hands in his gloves. âSnowâs gettinâ deep! We can all make a fort!â
âEvery job needs a foreman.â The warm smile that Alphonse beamed declared that this day was all he ever needed. âIâll supervise.â
